Artist’s Declaration
Artist’s Declaration of Shulamit Ahi-Yuval
My artwork is inspired by the form of nature all around me and by the flawlessness of the natural world.
For thirty years I have been studying the form of plants and underwater corals. Their exciting shapes, colours and textures and the way they blend and interact together, have a great influence, on my colourful work. For me, it is the balance between the shape and the colour covering that shape, which together creates perfection. I sometimes feel that a work without colour is like a sculpture without a soul.
After graduating from The Academy of Art and Design, Betzalel, Jerusalem, I concentrated on producing environmental sculptures for children to play with as well as painting canvases.
In 2004 I received a scholarship to study at the Pilchak Glass School (Chihuli) in Seatle and after graduating, I began producing glass sculptures. My technique in glass is ‘pate de ver’ and I am working with little pieces of coloured glass which are melted in a form and fired in a kiln. The combination of the clear and the opaque colours of the glass are leading me on a journey into the depths of the colours. As an artist I am continually looking to nature and discovering new combinations of colour and form which inspire me to create new glass sculptures.
My work has been included in exhibitions in the Erez Israel Museum in Tel Aviv in 2007 and 2011. I am also exhibiting my work internationally.
